Health and Safety
Please ensure you and your party read this information prior to booking. By booking you are agreeing that you accept and will be bound by these terms and conditions.
Should you have any queries regarding the terms and conditions or require any further information regarding the suitability of the walk for you and your party, please contact us prior to booking at the Visitor Centre on 028 9337 2318 or email info@thegobbinscliffpath.com.
The Gobbins Experience
We want you and those accompanying you to enjoy your experience with us, however The Gobbins Coastal Path can, for some people, be a physically challenging walk. This is a 5km (3 mile) walk with a steep access path to the lower coastal path which includes gradients of up to 1:4 in places. The path is narrow with many hand carved uneven steps that wind up and down along the bottom of the cliff. It is the equivalent of climbing and descending 50 flights of stairs.
- If you have a medical history of health conditions which could be exacerbated by exercise, for example heart conditions such as angina or heart attack, respiratory conditions such as asthma or emphysema, musculo-skeletal conditions such as back or joint pain or other concerns such as seizures or stroke you may find the walk unsuitable.
- If you are living with long term conditions like diabetes, it is your responsibility to make all necessary preparations in advance of The Gobbins Experience. One small suitable empty waist bag will be provided for someone living with diabetes in order to carry with them their emergency hypo treatment. This bag will be provided when you report to reception for you to transfer your hypo treatments into. Hypo treatments will not be provided by The Gobbins. No other bags will be permitted on The Gobbins Experience. If you use an insulin pump and need to bring spare supplies these will carried by your Guide in their backpack.
- Suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy walking boots (i.e. thick tread, with ankle support) must be worn. Footwear will be checked before departure and if unsuitable, you may be refused access to the walk. A limited number of pairs of boots are available for hire at £5. However, these may not always be available in ALL sizes and should not be depended upon. All visitors are required to wear a hard hat which is provided.
- The Gobbins tour is unsuitable for young children. No one under 1.2 metres, approx. 4 foot, will be permitted to take part. Children may not be carried.
- Visitors are required to report to reception at The Gobbins Visitor Centre 15 minutes before their tour departure time so as to confirm their participation. Failure to do so may result in management reselling any places not confirmed to drop in visitors.
- Measures are taken to minimise and manage the potential for rock fall. However, the cliffs are part of the natural environment and this cannot be entirely guaranteed. In undertaking this walk, you accept that you may be exposed to such events and understand they could cause you serious harm.
- Due to the nature of the walk we may be required to restrict the length of tours for safety reasons for which no partial refund will be given. In this case we will try to substitute that part of the tour. Should the length of the path be restricted we will endeavour to contact you before your visit.
Hazards to Consider
We want you to enjoy your experience with us at The Gobbins, therefore you and your party need to consider a number of potential hazards when planning your visit. The Gobbins is a strenuous outdoor experience and is not suited for everyone. To ensure that our visitors are protected and have the best possible time with us, please read these hazards which you should consider before you and your party decide if The Gobbins is a suitable experience for you to visit.
Medical Hazards to consider:
- The Gobbins can, for some people, be a physically challenging 3 hour walk along a narrow, uneven path with many steps and with a very steep climb at the end. You should be aware of over exertion from walking.
- If you have a medical history of health conditions which could be exacerbated by exercise for example heart conditions such as angina or heart attack, respiratory conditions such as asthma or emphysema, musculo-skeletal conditions such as back or joint pain or other concerns such as seizures or stroke you may find the walk unsuitable.
- If you require the use of an Epi-pen please ensure it is carried with you and please inform your Guide at the end of the safety brief.
- If living with diabetes, you will be permitted to carry hypo treatments in The Gobbins bag provided at reception.
- There is a small risk of contracting Weil's disease from coming into contact with wildlife residue, therefore food is not permitted on the path (except hypo treatment for people living with diabetes) and you are advised to use hand sanitiser after you complete the walk or wash your hands when you return to the Visitor Centre.
- Due to the narrowness of the cliff face path, walking aids are not permitted, including walking poles and umbrellas.
- The tunnel is dark and narrow and may be unsuitable for those suffering from claustrophobia.
- The Gobbins includes an active bird colony. If you have a fear of birds then this adventure may not be for you.
- You will not be allowed to undertake the walk if our guides suspect you may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Environmental Hazards to consider:
- In this natural environment, while measures are taken to minimise and manage the potential for rock fall, the cliffs are part of the natural environment and this cannot be entirely guaranteed. In undertaking this walk, you accept that you may be exposed to such events and understand they could cause you serious harm.
- All visitors are required to wear a hard hat while on their guided tour to protect them from potential injury from overhanging rocks etc. Please note, nothing can be worn under the helmet unless it is for faith or medical reasons.
- No climbing is permitted and you must stay within the designated boundaries of the path and follow the Guides instructions at all times.
- Suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy walking boots i.e. thick tread, with ankle support must be worn. No heels, canvas shoes, flat soled trainers or sandals are allowed. Footwear will be checked before departure and if found unsuitable, you may be refused access to the walk.
- Slips and trips can occur due to the uneven surfaces on the access and cliff paths.
- Water is allowed, but should be carried in your pocket or around your neck on a lanyard.
- Weather along the coast can change suddenly so everyone must come prepared, wearing outdoor clothing and footwear that is suitable for all conditions.
- The Gobbins Path runs at a height of 15 metres above water level in places and has a dark tunnel and an entrance feature where conditions may be cramped for taller visitors or those of a larger build and includes 50 flights of uneven steps.
Practical Hazards to consider:
- The Gobbins tour is unsuitable for young children. No one under 1.2 metres, approx. 4 foot, will be permitted to take part. Children may not be carried.
- Those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Your hands should be kept free. All belongings may be left in our free, secure lockers at the Visitor Centre.
- Smoking and vaping is prohibited on The Gobbins Path.
- Animals are not allowed on The Gobbins Path.
- Bags are not permitted on the path, this includes back packs and camera bags (The Gobbins will provide a small suitable waist bag for those people with diabetes who need to carry hypo treatments). In the interests of safety, cameras should fit in your pockets or be on a strap facing forward. Tablet computers and selfie sticks are not permitted.
- 'Go Pro' type recording devices may only be used in a body harness and cannot be attached to our helmets or carried on a pole.
- There are no toilets on the path so we would ask that you avail of the facilities before entering the briefing room.
General terms and conditions
- Tour guides reserve the right to direct visitors off the path at any time due to health and safety issues.
- Management may refuse entry to, or eject visitors from, the Visitor Centre or guided walk for abusive, threatening, drunken or other antisocial behaviour (including smoking in no smoking areas), causing a nuisance, carrying offensive weapons or illegal substances, or making unauthorised audio, video or photographic recordings. No refund will be given.
- Visitors are required to report to Reception at The Gobbins Visitor Centre 15 minutes before their tour departure time so as to confirm their participation. Failure to do so may result in management reselling any places not confirmed to drop in visitors.
Cancellations by management
- Tours can be cancelled at short notice due to changes in the weather or for operational reasons and we will endeavour to contact you prior to your tour time if this is the case. Should this occur a full refund or reschedule of the tour will be offered.
Refunds
- No refunds will be given unless the tour is cancelled by us. Should you be unable to attend we would request at least 72 hours' notice. We will try and reschedule your visit on the next suitable date available for your party if this is an option to you.
